p.1 #1 · DPP not showing thumbnails, freezing

Just recently my DPP went all wonky. It takes forever to start up, and once it does, it doesn't show thumbnails. It shows the thumbnail frames and filenames, but no pictures. Double-clicking on one just start the beachball rolling, but nothing happens, the picture never opens, then it crashes. This is on OS X 10.5.3, with DPP 3.2. Worked fine before.

I remember seeing something like this here and the answer was bad ICC profile, or a bad "Picture Style" -- I think I did load some of those from Canon's site, but I don't know where they install into to take them out -- or something like that. Anyone have a clue for me?

I don't work on a Mac, but I recall seeing something about deleting the preference file to correct mis-operation.

There is a DPP folder in Preferences folder, but no prefs file at all in it! This after deleting and re-installing the program. Tried to run it, same lockup. It was never the most Mac-like program, but this is very bad behavior. Any other ideas?

OK, found DPP 3.4.1 update (also in meantime OS X 10.5.4 update, but I don't think that had anything to do with it). After updating DPP, this time it at least launched correctly, although pics still didn't show. Went into Prefs dialog and checked "Color Management" settings, I remember that being mentioned as a problem, and saw that my monitor profile was set to a strange filename, an ICC file in Displays folder but just letters and numbers for a name, almost like a temp file or something, I have no idea what it was. Set it to my current monitor profile and all is well.

OK I found it

Even while deleting and reinstalling all the Canon applications from my Mac (10.5.4.) and installing the latest software. Some how DPP found its old settings. Like what drive and folder to open with by default and the monitor profile.

Turns out the the Monitor Profile that I had created with my Spider was the culprit. The moment I switched to sRGB everything works flawless!

Tonight I will calibrate my screen again and hope that is will work....

Here is Canon's support advice:

Since you're still having problems, the problem you are experiencing
might be the result of corrupt user permissions, especially if you've
run Apple's "Live Updates" recently. Here are the things you can try
to resolve the issue. Force Quit (Command + Apple key + ESC) if the
computer is locked up. Get back to the desktop, then:

Verify & Repair Disk Permissions: (Please exit any running applications
first.)
1. open "Macintosh HD:
2 open "Applications"
3. open "Utilities"
4. open "Disk Utility" (hard drive icon with stethoscope)
5. click on "Macintosh HD"
6. click on tab at top that says "First Aid"
7. bottom left click on "Verify Disk Permissions"
8. after that finishes then click on "Repair Disk Permissions"

Once this is done try to run the download again. If the install hangs
at this point again, then you can do the following:

Create a New Administrator Account and Install under that Log-In
Account:

1. Click on the "Apple icon" in the top left corner
2. select "System Preferences" from the menu
3. go to the bottom line that says "System"
4. select "Accounts" and click on the "+" sign to add a new account
5. call the new account "canon" with users name "canon" and Password of
"canon"
6. then click on the "security" tab and put a check mark into the box
at the
bottom that says "Allow this user to administer computer"
7. close "accounts" then close "system preferences"
8. go to the "Apple icon" in the top left and log out of main user
account.
9. go to "Apple icon" and log-in as "canon".
10. now run the software installation. (it will usually run just fine
in the new account)
11. when install finishes, log out of the canon account and back into
the main account and try using the software.

Another possibility that I came across is to try to zap the PRAM on your
system:
1. Press and hold the COMMAND + OPTION + P + R keys during startup
2. Continue holding down all four keys until you hear your Mac start up
sound chimes four times.
3. Release COMMAND + OPTION + P + R

You may wish to reference this link from Apple for more information on
what system settings will be reset to default when you preform this
operation:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238

If this fails you might have either a Mac installer problem or a
corruption of your "root user account permissions." Apple Technical
Support can walk you through a procedure called "enabling a ROOT user."
From there you should be able to repair permissions from the "root" user
account.
