On this monitor, which is not the best, they look very contrasty and over processed.
I find myself that shots as they finish a good phrase, or just finish, can be better because they often have a look of triumph, of pleasure or even doubt---and they aren't sucking on a licorice stick.....
Marc, please respond to the licorice statement, you dont respond to photography as such just to political items. So, your statement is not worth much, thanks anyway. BTW, you have not commented on any of my work in a very long time. BTW, I have been a member here for a long time as well, and you are not the FM Moral Police. If you are such a friendly and helpful guy then please comment more oftern and be a bit more fair in your assessment of people. And please restate the gentlemena's second statement. I did expect more from you than the public blast - you could have PM's me with your personal reasons for not supporting my work and why you don't comment on my pictures. Oh well.
Thanks Taylor, the comment on processing was ok, there are those that prefer the photojournalistic style of no processing, no issue there, glad for the comment. The pictures were taken at night during the band's perfomance, and the SB-800 brought it in. The processing included infrared filters, contrast work, with color treatment to make some artistic prints out of the captures besides plain snapshots - typical concert pics we have all seen daily.
Thanks Andre, not touchy at all. The licorice statement remains. Do you know what he is talking about and have you seen any work that defines what he is talking about? Please reread his second statement, it sounds like you have not read it.
So, I asked for clarification, examples of his work that would define his suggestions, because his grammar is only clear to you guys. The response so far is very immature and angry - basically an attack. Please stick to the post.
And if you can please restate his second statement and the licorice thing.
Also, please comment on my pics more often
Joe

Rather than blast the guy about the licorice statement, why not ask him POLITELY what it means? Your responce was harsh and unwaranted. I agree 100% with Marc. Marc is not the Morality Police, but a good standing member pointing out that you are out of line.
I'll comment on your pics when your attitude changes.
Sure Andre, thanks much, I did ask him POLITELY, no need to shout. Here is my sentence so you can read it again: "I am not sure what sucking on a licorice stick is about. I am not sure what you mean by a look of triumph
Show me some of your great pics that don't suck at anything so we can see what art is
Thanks"
I am not sure what the issue you bring up is besides personal with my work or me. I think we went through this last time you commented on some of my work. I try to stay with the pictures and the art, leaving the personal politics out.
Let us revisit the gentleman's sentence: "I find myself that shots as they finish a good phrase, or just finish, can be better because they often have a look of triumph, of pleasure or even doubt---and they aren't sucking on a licorice stick.....
"
I took that to mean: People often don't look great whilst playing wind instruments, so maybe shots when they're not forcing out a hard puff might be more flattering.
Thanks FirewireGuy, so that means that papageno says it would have been best to capture the shots when the musicians did not have the wind instruments in their mouth?
Joe,
Your response to me is what I’m talking about. Is there really a need to go on the attack so often? I used to offer a lot of comments on images here, but responses like yours make me feel like it isn’t worth the effort. Relax and enjoy the input from some very, very talented photographers here on FM. If you don't want honest critiques of your images, simply state that in your post.
I apologize for ruffling your feathers, I was only trying to point out what you apparently don’t see.

First: try to put yourself in other peoples shoes when you read this:
"Show me some of your great pics that don't suck at anything so we can see what art is"
Sounds like a harsh challenge to me ... sorry if I misread it. I was not out to get you upset, just pointing out what I and others apparently took the wrong way.
Second: use your imagination; "licorice stick" probably refers to a woodwind instrument. The artist do kind of look like they are sucking on large pieces of licorice.
Third: These images are OK but not up to your usual quality. The contrast seems off.
# 4 definitely looks too “contrasty”. I like #2 (even though he is apparently sucking on a licorice stick) especially if you could bump the blue contrast down a little.
By the way I was baffled by papageno’s response as well – it did take some thinking to understand.
