Any decent surge protector is up to the job. Personally, I'm partial to Belkin strips for their price/insurance ratio and generally well-thought-out designs.
If you've got the cash for one, though, a UPS is definitely worth the extra money. You need a fairly large capacity one to meet the power demands of the Mac Pro, but a good UPS (most of APC's line, Belkin, some CyberPower) will both clean up your power and give you a little run time in a power outage.
These cost more but are worth it. They are available from various online sources for less than Triplite direct. I prefer units with metal enclosures. There have been fires from failed MOVs in plastic units.
I also have a whole-house surge suppressor installed in the power meter base. My local power company installed this. There have been many technical articles written on the value of having redundant protection. Another option is surge suppression installed at the circuit breaker box.
All depends on how much you want to spend, what level of risk you are willing to take, and what part of the country you are in (storms, incomming power quality).
In my community the local power company has a special group that deals with power quality issues and are helpful for consumers on this issue.

You also should be aware that power-strip surge protection devices which typically use metal-oxide varisitors (MOV) have a limited life span because the process of shunting the surge degrades the MOV. (See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Varistor).

Whichever one you get, make sure you are suppressing all the various entry points: Cable Modem - COAX connection. Router/Firewall - Ethernet/RJ45 coonector. USB (or other) printer, External Firewire Harddrive, or nice 24"- 30" Wide Screen Monitor connected to your Mac? Make sure all of their power units are plugged in the the suppressor. The weakest link is where you get fried.
Remember to trace any and all cables to and from the box and make sure whatever they are connected to is included.

I'd consider a UPS (uninterrupted power system). They include both surge protection and power backup. They are pretty cheap considering most computer failures are caused by power problems. I'm using units in this Tripp Lite family: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16842111030
I will be running a 2.0dp G5, 2x internal SATA HDs, 4x raid HD, 24in LCD through mine. I'll let you know how it goes when I receive it later this week. People with higher power demands that have written positive reviews on this unit.

The surge protector to me is Bestek 8 outlet surge protector. I like this brand since I don't need to worry about safe. The design is very helpful for us to keep the laptop and other tools safety. Maybe you can get one of this brand surge protector in a discount price on Amazon. Since there has activity about it on prime day. Hope this point is useful to you. Best regards.

I agree. I've always felt that surge protectors are pretty poor value for money compared to a cheap UPS, and they are so variable in quality that i have little faith they will do what they say. And of course you don't know how good they are until after the surge.

Cyberpower pure sine wave UPS is what I use. Inexpensive, surge protects, and sends out quality power.
Certain components prefer pure sine wave output when on battery power, just something to consider. I personally wouldn't use any old UPS with a modern expensive PC.

Only a UPS that does AC to DC to AC provides full protection, or a true Line Conditioner like those made by Oneac. With surge suppressors the cheap ones are worse than nothing at all as when the MOV chip inside blows the current is going up the ground line and then will readily fry the electronics.
To be safe during an electrical storm I would unplug the computer entirely and not trust the surge protector.
Whatever you get be sure that it has a LED light to let you know when the MOV has blown and it is time to buy a new surge suppressor.

I've been doing this for years buying old APC UPS units off eBay without batteries, then buying batteries from a 3rd party source. If you into a little DIY, good clean power out of these units.

I have two of those from back in the day when they were in production. Both developed issues with the battery measurement electronics and are not worth fixing. I used one for low power devices for a couple more years and the other is only good for a few minutes regardless of the battery. It's too bad, because they have a nice, large, useful display that is better than the newer models.
The best UPS units are double conversion with sine wave output, which are cleaner and better for powering a wide variety of sensitive products. They are substantially more expensive than a standby UPS and consume more power.

Sometimes I wonder how people find these threads because you have to change the forum year just do search them. Maybe google search is bringing them up.
