p.1 #1 · Shutter count - D300

I've just realised this... much to my dismay....

I have the D300 custom "File No Seq" set to "ON" with the intention that I can keep a true record of my exact Shutter-Count. Using 1 CF card, there is no problem... whether you start shooting with the card 1/2 full or empty... the File sequence rolls on from your last shot fired. OK so far!

Mixing between different CF cards is also not a problem so long as they're empty or contain shots of a lower file no .

The problem comes if the CF Card has a picture stored off a different Camera ... in my case I had an old D70s pic labelled, for example: "DSC_6852" on one card.... When I put the same card in my D300 & took a snap... It was named Sequence No: "6853" ... despite having a different prefix.

Now any consequent shots roll on 6854 /6855 / 6856 .. etc whether I format or use a new Card!

... Despite me only having shot approx 1500 frames!

I realise the sequence can be "Reset" to go from "0001" again, but how can I find out my "true" shutter count?

(Thereafter, now I know what to expect, I could ensure I don't make the same mistake again)

The file naming only goes to 9999 anyway. So when you hit 10,000 you go back to 0001.

Thanks Fcobb ... that's sorted it!

My true count is "2038"

So I've reset the sequence to "001" took a pic.... Renamed it as "2038" & the next shot will read "2039"

Yes ... I realise that Gman... I've come up with a cunning plan though:

I'm using the prefix "RJ0_ (obviously my initials + a zero) ... The plan being that when I hit "9999" I'll change the prefix to "RJ1_" That gives me scope up to 100,000 pictures.

Past that point I'll probably be selling the D300 at a car-boot-sale & upgrading to a D700 or whatever it'll be called!

Yeah... you're just being too fussy The shutter count is always embedded in the out of camera jpgs and is easy to read. Don't give yourself something extra to do trying to keep track of shutter count with your file numbers, it's pointless.

I use my initials as my image name.

I do the same thing and add a numeral. I started with FM1_xxxx, and increase it every time the numbers roll over. I'm up to FM3_xxxx now. It also prevents any two image files on my computer from having the same name.
