Well as spring progresses, so do the creatures that appear around the house. These beautiful little creatures just arrived yesterday. As usual, they appear all at once and in the same areas of the yard. They are Emerald Jewel Winged Damselflies. I think that is correct anyway.
These are not macro shots, but rather, they are close ups that are hand held wherever the damselflies landed after chasing them for 10 minutes.
On some I went with strictly natural light and on others I used a heavily diffused (to soften the light) SB-800 on an articulating arm to the left and about 45 degrees above the lens plain. I dialed in the flash to balance with the daylight by using the camera in manual mode at around 1/250 sec. and the lens set to about f8.0 for most of them. I also used a 1.4x AFS Tamron TC on some shots....on my 180mm f3.5 Tamron macro lens mounted on the D3. I used ISO 200 for most, and ISO 400 when I needed a tad more DOF.
I hope you like em. I had to take a break from birds and flowers... I love these little guys.
Thank you Lil... I was taking a big chance with these as I had a heart catheterization done yesterday morning and while I was leaning out and trying to hold really still, I felt like I was going to pop my entry site.
Probably should wait a day or two and heal up, but these guys just don't stick around very long.
Great shots Terry. You captured some fine details especially last two shots. Why not use your 105VR for these. ( working distance?). Hope your feeling ok and good luck with the test results.

Hi Harsha. The Jewel wings are very skittish right now... being newbees they are a bit camera shy and thus the 180mm working distance. In the coming days they should become easier to work around, based on passed experience, so I should be able to close the distance.
Terry, these are really nice captures, the greeene... oh my, it just pops out of the screen, matter a fact I blew a pixel on my 24" dell when the page loaded

It's all for the cause....
Thanks Lil.
