i agree with #2 being slightly oof these are with the 120-300 2.8 and 30D ... miss siggy is tempermental sometimes with my 30D

the reason i post #2 is because i love the scene... the colors, the pose and the bulging muscles

Dann, the first is excellent... expression, framing, focus are all great. Keep up the good work.

Dann: Both shots capture moments of maximum exertion. I can see what you're saying about what you like with #2, though it is a bit OOF. I'd like to see something a bit more toward a peak action (rather than maximum exertion) moment, like at the height of the jump (#1) or mid-stride (#2). Not saying that'd be the only thing worth capturing, but more a suggestion to mix it up. Also, while the exertion shots are cool, I also enjoy seeing the more 'relaxed' moments of action when there's less strain and more grace. Keep 'em coming.

Anyone who doesn't understand this has never been to New Orleans. The locals there are actually called 'yats, 'cuz one of the favorite sayings is "Where y'at?".

I received my undergrad degree from Tulane "Way down yonder"...

I be here, Dann. 1 @|\/| |-|3|23

Number 2 would have been a challenge under the best of circumstances. Here, though, your light was failing and the runner was coming right at you with a uniform without much contrast.

Where were you "aiming" your AF point? The solid color singlet and dark shorts leave you with limited AF targets. I might have gone for the shoulder straps or even his face (might have had to move the AF point up from the center). It looks like the lens focused somewhere around the runner's hands. Good moment, though.

I like number 1.

I do like #1 also, good action shot and reasonably sharp.

Maybe F/4 might be easier in good light ? The background is reasonably distant and complimentary to the action that a slightly more forgiving dof is OK in this case.

I have the same lens too.

Nice work Dann,
looks like you are finding the little things that drove me to getting a 1D , the X0d/X00d like to focus where they want , unlike their bigger brothers who are do what they are told

Like Dennis said , find somewhere with more contrast, it is alright using the focus point on the face in the first shot as the sun is out cause contrast on the face, but when the sun goes behind a cloud/ or down contrast drops resulting in focus issues.

Also try stopping down a bit , it helps with the focus inaccuracy and gives more leeway to get sharp shots.

Dan,
you will find the Canon 300 f2.8 works much better on the 30d. If thats the option you go for, that way you are really only borrowing the lens till you sell it on for much the same price as you pay for it.

Cheers
Allan

Dann,
I like your stuff. You're really getting into it. Above all listen to Russ. He absolutely knows what he's talking about. How are you doing with your baseball pics? The HS regional is coming up at NNHS. I worked with one of the umpires today and asked him to watch out for you.
