p.1 #1 · Need help with school project - clothing photography

hi all,
I could use some help
I teach digital photography at a high school in Washington.
I have been asked to do some clothing photography for the student store's new line of 'fashion'.

I don't have any experience shooting clothing and would like to turn this into a realistic project for my students.

I might use models too, but for the purposes of this post I'm just looking for advice on shooting the clothes flat.

the clothing is mostly black fleece and outdoor type jackets/pants with a few white shirts as well. some is shiny nylon type stuff

What I have to work with
portable background kit with white seamless paper. also have gray paper
1 interfit stellar studio kit with 2 softboxes
plenty of pocket wizards
4 vivitar 285hv's
Canon 30d with variety of lenses...I'm thinking the 50mm macro would be a good lens for this. or a 28-135
I have some studio stands and can borrow heavy arms from the video department, so I might be able to rig a boom...but I don't know if it will hold one of the interfit's, but the 285's should be ok

in our video studio we also have some very nice flourescent studio lights that I have thought about using. We also have lowell tungsten video kits.

I have done some research and it looks like laying clothing down flat and shooting straight down at it is the best way to go. However I dont really have the space for that. i was thinking of using a table and propping it at a 45 degree angle or so and using a tripod to match the angle of the table.

any ideas on the best lighting arrangement? 2 softboxes on either side and a 285 through an umbrella over the top?

any and all ideas very welcome

thanks!
