As I'm interested in getting into people photography I thought it about time to post something.

My daughter, 12 next week.

Natural light
D300, 50mm 1.8, Iso200, f/6.3, 1/30s.

Not exactly a candid thanks to my wife giving it the old "your father wants to take your picture" - "gee thanks!"

My critique - not enough light on the face / eyes, too "posed", not smiling (kids for you), maybe too straight on.

Your thoughts ? Don't be easy on me now, call it a snap if you like I won't cry honest !

Your own critique seems right to me, mostly the light. Still, there is enough light to make out her eyes just fine. The pose is good, looks like what you said but she looks relaxed and this looks more like a 'moment' to me and not posed. And a kid with a treat...what's not to like. Her expression is great for a kid that age (my youngest daughter just turned 13) and she is adorable so IMO, you are off on the right foot!

Shoot, not much need to be easy on you as far as I can tell. Good control of exposure. Nothing really looks blown, yet there's still plenty of clarity to her face and eyes. My only critique might be her hand holding the spoon. Perhaps it would be better if it were more in the frame so her fingers aren't cut off. But it's not a deal breaker by any means.

The darkness in the face doesn´t bother me at all.
I like the overall image, although i agree with Joseph about the cut off fingers.

It is very hard to see before the shot but the highlight on her nose makes it seem much broader than it is.

Thanks guys.

I know what you mean Sahne, our eldest (boy) is 13 and all you get from him these days is grunts !

Agree about the fingers and yes the highlight makes her nose look wider than it is.
