You will always be better off selling your gear yourself because no shop will give you anything near what it is worth in the used market. Understand that most shops accept trades but they do it to make money on the used gear. On a trade expect to lose about 20-35% average of what you could sell it for yourself.
I posted a 5D on Ebay, and all I've got so far is offers from "Nigeria".
Reasonable trade-ins at Canon sound good to me. After all that's what I do with cars usually...

Maybe UK ebay is different. I sold all my film gear on ebay and made shedloads.

With the constant changes in the market are there places out there that except trade ins when going to a different Camera body or lens?
Many camera stores, including B&H, Adorama, KEH will accept them but you will always get less than if you put it on B&S here or on Ebay. I've had excellent results with both selling venues.

The serious people will bid in the last 5 minutes. Just be patient and put in a reserve to safe-guard yourself.
The key to selling on ebay is not to be greedy... set a reserve, sure, but don't make it too high and don't put in a high initial bid. Make the photos of your products good quality and personalize the auction with your own words and description. Don't just cut and paste technical specs.
I've seen cameras selling for way over what I would expect on ebay because the seller was smart and started low. I've also seen many bodies that got zero bids because the seller put in a starting bid close to, or over, what the gear is worth (or a Buy It Now price that's way too high). People see that and they just don't bother bidding.
Personally I prefer selling local and use Craigslist.
up here in canada, i use kijiji.ca. you should try the .com version and see what you can get. it's free and it's not that hard to sell it privately. you'll have more money for it in the end...
Hi Miles.
The information given, so far, by others is good. I would recommend F/M , Buy/Sell, first, then eBay. Look closely at the B/S forum, considering what you have for sale-to this crowd-vrs. the larger eBay crowd. A nice item, good condition, priced reasonably, from an honest/known seller, should sell well on either. In other words, try these two, before some type of trade in. Good photos of the item will be a plus. Last week, for example, i sold a lens on Ebay, that did not get any interest on F/M. A lens not popular here, however, on eBay, a buyer hit on the buy it now. Try F/M first-if its an item you normally see selling here, otherwise, try eBay.
Good luck
Harry
I just sold my ef 28-105 3.5-4.5 on e-bay for more than I paid for it, started the bidding low (£15) knowing that there's a decent market for this lens, no reserve, 10 day auction and just see what it goes for, the market for decent EF mount lenses on E-bay in the UK is huge, you'll always get a decent price for it.

Like I said (at least on UK ebay) the seller simply can't lose.
It costs very little to place the sale, if you don't trust Paypal insist on a cheque and don't send the item until you have the money cleared.
I was lucky enough to foresee that I wouldn't want to use film again soon after I bougth my forst 10D so I sold all my 35mm, MF & LF gear and raised thousands with no problems.
Contrary to what people say *most* people on ebay are genuine and honest, you've just got to keep your wits about you. I'm well over 300 feedback now and have never had an issue I couldn't resolve.
