p.1 #1 · date of manufacture

considering a new canon dslr body with seperate lens. The body and lens will probably be purchased from a local photograhy shop so I am able to inspect both box and contents. Is it possible (and how ) to ascertain the date of manufacture of the equipment in the box from information on the box itself -or if not- can this be determined from an inspection of the camera/lens . Would much prefer to buy 2007/8 equipment than say 2004/5 ! whence at least some of the many problems I read about may have been eliminated !!!

For lenses specifically, every "L" I know of as well as a couple of non-L's contain an imprinted date code on the rear of the lens. Details can be found here: http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Canon-Lenses/Canon-Lens-Aging.aspx

Somebody else will have to chime in to fill you in on date codes for bodies. I would think that if you had a serial number (which might be on the box) you could possibly call Canon and find out the details associated with that serial number. I've never done that so I'm not sure what information Canon could provide.

Good luck!
