Shot my first volleyball match today - very fun! But very tough, that ball moves FAST! These are with Mark III: 70-200 for the floor level ones, and 300 for the balcony shots. C and C always welcome.

Wow, Wes, these look strobed. Is this the gym lighting? Bright! I like how clean and colorful they are, and the light drop-off in the background is helpful. I don't know volleyball photography very well, but #11 is an awesome shot. I'm also drawn to 5 (is that legal? and would a horizontal crop make it stronger?), 9, 10, 13 and 14. Good stuff. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks much Russ! No strobes and it is the same place as the gymnastics meets, but it does seem like they turned the lights up a bit brighter, maybe since the WNIT games are there. I agree that 5 would look great as a horizontal crop, but it is a pretty tight crop as is - lots of space cut from the top. When thinking about the shots I wanted, I planned on shooting horizontal from the balcony, but just forgot once I got started. Next time for sure. I did have quite a bit of trouble getting the active AF point to lock where I wanted it - seemed like it kept grabbing the bright white top of the net, or one of the Illinois players. Went with the center, shooting through the netting most of the time, but tried one on the upper points a little as well, but didn't seem to make a whole lot of difference, since the players move around alot. Guess this is where I should be using the af on button rather then the shutter for af...

Your exif is showing ISO 1600, 1/800th at f2.8. That is quite good lighting....did they have the TV lights on?
Very clean, good action...especially for your first attempt. My daughter plays (HS and 15U) and I still struggle to follow the action, though I'm getting better at predicting where it's going - little things like looking at how much the setter arches their back to detect a back set.

I think those are the normal lights, but maybe they had just replaced some bulbs or something since the last gymnastics meet, those are the same setting I used for that, but these seem at least a half stop brighter, same with the women BB game I shot there Sunday. Might have more to do with the white jerseys, rather then the darker gymnastic uniform.
I agree, and I felt way more comfortable with the angles from above. Need to look at shooting from the other side of the net on ground level some next time. Still learning what angles and locations work for vb, and for me.
I kinda like 15 because of the teammate looking on in the background - her eyes are framed nicely between the ball and the foreground players arm, though chopping off part of hear head is not ideal at all.
