I have a four gig SDHC in the Mark III right now,
I am not sure of the limitations but its way way up there. You are good up to at least 32 gig in the camera with SDHC.
I use a Sandisk Extreme lll 12GB CF along with a Sandisk Extreme lll 8GB SDHC...Mark lll and cards function as anticipated and make for a smooth set-up that is functionally easy to implement and administer.Found it to be of interest that the SD Memory card appears to be faster than it's CF counterpart !
haven't found one good reason to have 2 different types of cards in my 1D3. in fact i find it a major nuisance to need 2 completely different form factors to do the job one should have done. yes on a 1D3 the SD cards can be a little faster but outside of that camera they dog down in the transfer time vs say a UDMA CF card and compliant reader. the buffer on the 1D3 handles most of the short falls of the lack of forthought in design (as in UDMA support which was available at the time).
as i also own a nikon D3 (2 UDMA compliant CF slots) i can say when Canon finally supports UDMA in their high speed camera and possibly 2 CF slots you will never look at a SD card again the same way if at all.
Yes. SD card works fine in my 1DMKII and 1DMKIII as primary or backup. From what I understand, you can have same size as primary CF card or larger for backup. I never felt the need for the backup.

unfortunately, the world is going the way of SD and MMC cards pretty quickly in all things except dSLRs. Even that is showing signs of shifting in the future. While I prefer CF, I'm fully expecting that they will begin to be phased out.
