p.1 #1 · On the Rocks

I am trying to move away from my usual Wildlife Photography and experiment with something else. I don't have a very active imagination so subjects are hard for me. This is my first attempt. Any thoughts?

Nicely done.
I think my only critique would be the large highlights on the glass.

A good way to get rid of those is to use a softbox and put your lighting source directly behind your subject (shooting into the camera) and then put your black background between the subject and the light so that it covers about 60% of the softbox. Then you place black boards (foamcore works well) on either side of the subject to almost form a box and you'll get really nice edge highlights and the rocks in the glass should fade out as it gets closer to the middle.

Sounds complicated and if you have a hard time conceiving it, let me know and I'll draw it out for you or something because I'm not so great at explaining these things.

But a very nice image overall.

Cheers.

I applaud you for getting out of your "comfort zone" (wildlife) and challenging yourself. I agree with Matthew that it would look even better with smaller, well defined (almost crisp) highlights. Nicely done.

Cheers,

Matthew - I'd like to see this drawn out. I'm not quite grasping how to cover the softbox with the black background.
