p.1 #1 · UK v. Indiana, 1st attempt at Soccer

Shoot my first soccer game today. The vb match I was at went to 5 games, so I missed most of the first half. These were mostly with mark III and the 300 2.8 with a 1.4tc, still wish I had a bit more reach sometimes. Also, a couple are with the 5d and 70-200, which did OK, but I do miss having another 1 series as a 2nd body. Since this is my first match, I wasn't sure what to look for, and I missed a several good opportunities because of it. C and C always welcome

First thought, crop them tight to the action and redisplay. Some good shots here.

Matt

were you shooting at 4.0? dof looks to be just right at these magnifications.

Thanks much for the comments. Most are already cropped a bit more then I would like, since it seemed a lot of the action took place on the far sides of the field. 500 would have been nice! Will look at cropping some a bit tighter though.

Yep, f4 (wide open on the 300 + 1.4tc) and the 70-200 stopped down to match. Does seem to work pretty well there - backgrounds are still pretty blurred, but you get a bit more in focus, esp. when they are close to you.

Where do other soccer shooters set up? I spent most of the time toward the corner on the back line. Nice when players are driving down the sidelines toward the goal, but the net got in the way a couple times, and you are farther away from the mid field action.

first few look unexposed to me but I haven't calibrated my monitor in a little while so take that with a grain of salt. I also second the cropping more too much dead space in some of these ... 9 even looks like you could go horizontal on it

Thanks for the feedback! The first couple were from the last few minutes of the first half and I was shooting into the sun. Subjects look OK, but the background is a little bit dark. And I usually bump the contrast a bit, which also make the bg a bit darker as well. Will look at cropping tighter in the future, but I also like to show at least some of what is going on around the player, etc.

Thanks again for the feedback, everyone. It is super helpful.
