Apple TV - client tool

OK - I just hooked up the Apple TV and have to say it has thrilled me more than any gizmo in the past 20 years. Cheap as hell, great streaming slideshows, flickr interface, all the bells and most of the whistles.

We made the lounge more intimate with a full renovation and the apple tv really makes it for me.

I'm doing similar with a PS3 - I have it hooked up to a high def 70" screen and show couples slideshows and so on. It's a real "wow" thing

Thanks for the heads up Red. Best gizmo in 20 years eh?

One of my wedding clients is an Apple developer and his project was Apple TV. I've been ignoring this particular product but will my curiosity is piqued. =)

I personally have a thing against Flikr but maybe it's time to let that go...

Yeah it's not the technology I'm against, I just have a thing against companies that claim to be for photographers but then completely ignore basic copyright law.

I love my Apple TV and yes I plan to use it to show off clients pictures. My only gripe is that you cannot choose what song it plays with the slideshow. Rentals are great too.

OK - when you upload a photo to flickr this is what happens (kind of) -

1) upload a 2400x2400 pixel photo
2) flickr resizes the image as small, medium, large and original.

When you browse flickr through the web you generally see the 'medium' size picture but the original is still there.

When you do a flickr slideshow through Apple TV (ATV) - the ATV grabs the largest file available and displays that. So, you get a nice Ken Burns slideshow - with music across the 52" Sony display and it looks terrific.

I have some flickr contacts whose images I really like - so, I have those images playing as a slideshow - if I want.

Try it - you might like it - and, for $200 ...

+1 on the Apple TV... It was nice before, but this latest software update really made it into something unique. I started fooling around with Flickr just to use the feature on the ATV. You can sync whatever songs you like to it and use those for the background music. They just shuffle, but you can control the content of the playlist. I highly recommend it for anybody with a client gallery and a nice display.

A funny story about playlist content... My wife and I were laying around watching the slideshow of our wedding pictures go by, and somehow the thing just kept bringing up all these romantic songs. It was one of those moments straight out of a "chick flick". I finally made a comment about the great song selection (extra points for me) and right when I had her thinking I had planned the whole thing out as a special gift....."She Hates Me" by Puddle of Mudd started jamming away. Rather loud, too, as I remember... Moment gone.

So the quality of the images holds up to that large of a screen?

It should, provided your hardware can playback the images/Ken Burns effects without stuttering. 1080p screens are only 1920x1080, so your average full-res 10-12MP image is being downsized (or a 2400px Flickr image is being downsized just a bit).

We display slideshows on a 52" LCD as well using a Mac Mini (considered an ATV but then thought, heck, why not just get another full-fledged computer). Works like a charm. I've always been curious as to how the ATV might be different...and I wonder if the playback might actually be even better from the ATV given its specialized hardware.
