p.1 #1 · Understanding exposure question

Hello eveyone, I am about halfway thru this book and byran
keeps mentioning that in order to achieve full frame sharpness
in the f/22 range I need to use " distance focus". Now before
I read any further what exactley does this mean? He mentions
a distance ring on fixed lenses but my 50 1.8 doesnt have it
or I am missing it. So my question is when you guys take a
photo that you want the whole frame in focus as sharp as you can
get what do you focus on and how far into the frame? I think he said
something about 1/3 up but want to ask anyway. Thanks for the help!

Google "hyperfocal distance".. essentially it's a way to make sure you get the most of your scene in focus.

The 50/1.8 mkII does not have a distance ring, nearly every other lens does.

http://www.dofmaster.com/dofjs.html is a great link for finding precisely what your DOF is. For instance, with a 5D focused 15 feet away at 31mm and f/7.1, everything from 7.5 feet away until infinity will be in focus, so if you keep anything within 7.5 feet out of frame, EVERYTHING will be in focus.
