p.1 #1 · Daylight handheld MOON at 896mm eq.!

I borrowed a 100-400mm IS from a fellow photog. just to get an idea b4 I make the upgrade. Not much going on in the park as it was late afternoon around 5.30 PM so I put on my x1.4 Kenko Tc and took a few shots of the moon. No AF since it's deactivated automatically w this lens (didn't tape the last pins). I found MF w this lens at 400mm pointing straight up a lot more difficult than w my 70-300mm...because of the length and the weight.
I have no idea if this thread belongs here or in the landscape forum. well it's not a landscape, it's a Moonscape so I thought "Nature" would be the closest call
Hope you like it!

Handheld during daylight?? Great capture - nothing more to say.

Thx for the comment Chris! glad i'm not the only 1 thinking that. It's kind of confusing because I see moon threads goin' on both here and in the landscape board!

You definately got a very sharp image for being handheld, with the TC. Great job, Nello!
See, all that relaxing by the swimming pool is paying back. It is giving you a steady hand.
Ciao ciao,

Tim, the problem about getting sharp images w full moon and eclipse is that there are no shadows casted over the craters, mountains and there's no contrast from the darker side thus the level of detail is very low. In order to get good details, half-moon or even less is ideal. Or maybe your shutter speed was too low so you lose detail because of the earth's rotation. Anyway, the exposure for the moon is a daylight exposure so it's just as easy as a shot taken in daylight w IS.
For this shot I used ISO 400, F9 1/320s IS on

Hi Nello, thanks for posting this very good and impressive shot. You really got some good detail in there. Really says something for the Kenko 1.4x (not forgetting the 100-400 lens and skill of the photographer of course). Also your sugesstion about shooting half moons is interesting.

Yes the Kenko latest version ( 300 DG) is a very clear piece of glass, specially when used to fast aperture lenses, actually the faster the lens the better. When I use it on my 100mm F2 (becomes 140mm F2.8) the AF speed and sharpness it's exactly the same! very very hard to tell the difference! When used with the Sigma 50mm f2.8 Macro the IQ is still very good but AF gets slower.

I've done a few moon pictures and for what you did, that's a great shot. Shooting straight up may be more stable than you think..
