p.1 #1 · Coyote Series

I went out last week to attempt to call in and photograph a coyote. I had an afternoon where the sun was peeking in and out of clouds, great lighting. I took my Nikon D300, Sigma 80-400 and a tripod. I took a padded seat and some camoflage netting and a cottontail rabbit distress call (mouth).

I cut a hole in the netting near an edge to fit over my lens behind the lens hood. It then draped around the tripod in front of me and blended me better with the large tree I was sitting in front of.

I'd made two one minute series of calls and was attemting to take a photo of an interested red-tailed hawk, when the first coyote suddenly appeared. There 5 total and they came at a full run one at a time. Only one animal was stationary at any point. I was only able to photo 4 of the 5 and took 32 images in 21 seconds, that's how fast it happened! ISO 500, f7.1, and 1/500 to 1/800 ss, I was shooting Aperture priority.

That's a very exciting thing to do, calling them in! Never know what will run in to you!

Great stuff!

Those are great shots. What part of the country were you taking them at?

You must have had some practice with the distress call to get em running in that fast and hard.

Great job

Excellent work, your technique is very effective and the animal wasn't spooked a bit, these are awesome.

Thanks, they became quite spooked when they hit my scent at about 20 yards. They then went downwind and barked and howled at me for a while.

The key to using a distress call is to indeed sound like something hurt.

Thanks for looking.

All the more impressive shots knowing they were truly wild. Maybe I'm imagining it but I swear you can see their intent in their eyes in those first 2 shots.

That is so true reko, they have a "focus" towards prey that is difficult to capture with a camera.

That particular animal had that look all the way until it hit my scent.
