p.1 #1 · photolaureates.org - A SCAM!

Be aware of photolaureates.org. Unfortunately I was a victim of a clever and money making SCAM.

These are facts that have happened to me, I have kept all evidence and can uphold my claims with living proof.

I’m a professional photographer, but wanted to get some recognition from somewhere serious on the web. As most photographers, you’d like to know if you’re doing a good job by showing others your work and getting critics to evaluate you.

After a brief search throughout the web, I found photolaureates.org . Happy with my find, I signed up and entered an very nice photo that I took while in Brazil. A few weeks later I receive an email congratulating me and informing that I was chosen as a finalist in the 2008 photography competition. With all the hype in this email, I sent in a high resolution final for the book that was supposedly going to be published in.

One this was done, I received an email with options to pay for an award plaque, and pay more for a larger photo and biography. I did so, spending a total of about $ 160.00 for 1 large photo, 1 book (2008 photography awards) and 1 customized biography.

Once this was done, I was asked to wait from November 2007 all the way until April of 2008 to receive my award and the 2008 published book. So far, so good!
Finally after waiting even longer than the announced time, my package finally arrived on July, 10 of 2008. I was so happy, but puzzled when I opened the package. Nothing in the package was from photolaureates.org, it was all from a place called “Photography Vibes – best of edition” but miraculously was exactly to the “T” of what I ordered from photolaureates.org. At the moment I brushed it off and went my merry way.

Being that everything did arrive, I was so proud of my award and being published in a book that completely blew off my first impression and went to show some friends my accomplishment!
Once I got there and showed various of my friends the award and photo, which, by the way was the only photo in the whole book that had its own page and the photo was larger than all the other ones in the entire book, and was the only photo that had its own biography (all the other biographies are small and in the last few pages of the book).

When I pulled out the award to show everyone, at first everyone was impressed, I was too!! But then one of my friendS pointed out and said “Strange, I didn’t know that Snoop Dog and Notorious B.I.G. were into photography”, to which I replied, “what??”.

At this point everything started to go downhill, and show the true colors of what was really going on.
To my shock, embarrassment and disbelief, I saw my award signed by “Calvin Broadus, Director” and “Christopher Wallace, Coordinator”. Do those names ring any bells??

So, naturally, I went online to check this all out, sure enough, I came across 10 forums of people all saying the same thing… it’s a SCAM!!! At one point someone mentioned that they fell for it too, and when they figured it out, they saw that the page that was in the book was GLUED to another page at the binding. As curiosity got the best of me, I looked at my book, and sure enough, my photo was glued into the book as well.

At this point I was furious and needed to tell people about this. How can someone claim to be something wonderful, then turn around and make money off some ones biggest dreams and turn these dreams into ashes by faking everything and sending out a load of crap.

MAY EVERYONE BE WARNED - THESE PEOPLE ARE CROOKS - IT IS A SCAM!!!

That is a common scam. Various versions have been around for decades. Thanks for the warning to the unsuspecting.

Don't be embarrassed, everyone gets suckered at one time or another. It's all goes along with trying to trust people. Just count it as tuition paid for one of life's more valuable lessons.

Jimmy,

I have been a working pro for many years and I learned a long time ago that the only awards worth getting for photography are a check that clears the bank, and repeat business. I am sure this may sound trite but I am very serious, you cannot ask for better awards or accolades for your work then a payment made cheerfully by your client and then repeat business or word of mouth from those same clients.

Strive for that type of recognition and the rewards are much better than plaques.

Best of luck to you

Rick

I have to agree with Spin City (Rick). When you say that you're a professional photographer, to me that means you are making a living through your skills as a photographer. If that's the case, there's no better validation of your skills than that of paying clients. There's an old saying, "Money talks, BS walks". Sorry that you were taken in, but the only critics that you need to satisfy are your clients. And if they keep coming back to you, and referring others, what more do you need?

There's a similar "contest" that is advertised annually in (I think) Parade magazine (the flyer that comes in newspapers around the country). When I was taking photography courses, I entered a photo into the "contest", was told I was a finalist (but did not win) and was offered the "opportunity" to purchase the book that was being published with all the finalists' photos. I bought it, figuring "why not?"; it wasn't expensive and I thought it would be neat to have a book with my photo in it, and to see all the other (what must be) cool photos that were finalists as well.

When it arrived (after a really long time), the book was full of photos that were good to absolutely horrendous...one was of someone's kitchen with half of a Christmas tree in the background, underexposed and with the colors WAY off. I figured after looking at the book further that this person probably knew the contest was a scam & sent in the photo to see if the company would have the gall to publish it.

This happens in all professions. I started out in public relations, and was thrilled to see that I had been named to "Who's Who in PR." Then I discovered that to get into the directory of Who's Who in PR, I would have to cough up a tidy little sum. I passed. I realize now that they probably got my name and contact information from PRSA, the professional association for PR. What I should have done was complain to them about selling my credentials. This is years ago, though. It would be nonsensical to pursue it now.

After wrestling with those 2 posts of yours I said, "is English your 2nd language?" e.g

cant - can't
DONT - don't
BELEAVE - believe
reseved - received
sreechin - ya got me on this one. I think searching
askin - askin'
facks - I am afraid to guess, but surely not a "u"
takin. - taken? takin'?
goin - goin'
lil - ?
im - I'm

Just, you know, kind of looks that way. No problem. English can be a difficult language to get right. Its that pesky apostrophe that causes so many problems. Must be the English major in me

I think the collective IQ of Americans has reached an all time low. Grammar, spelling, punctuation and oration are no longer taught. We are being dumbed down to a level that's frightening.

Ain't that the truth. We can blame email and IMs for that. It hurts my ears to hear or read it.

And if English is here second language, what of it? Nonetheless, I believe she did well at getting her point across.
