I'm looking to upgrade my scanner and am considering the Epson V700. I'll use it primarily for negatives and transparencies and an occasional photo.
Any comments, pro or con, will be appreciated.
Dan and Jim -- Thanks for your input. So far that's two votes for the V750.
Am I correct in assuming that the only difference between the V700 and V750 is the fluid mount with additional software and that it can be purchased separately as an accessory?
I've been unable to determine how the wet mount works since no local stores carry the V750 and Epson's site doesn't give any details. The term 'wet' conjures up a messy operation. Do the negatives actually get wet then have to be dried afterwards, what fluid is used etc? Any education here would be greatly appreciated.
I have the V750 also have used it to digitize hundreds of my old 35mm slides and negatives.
The resolution is outstanding and I am particularly impressed by the built in Digital Ice technology that saves hours of Photoshop work by eliminating dust particles.

Major differences (albeit minor) in the V700 and V750 are listed here:
Thanks for the link Ken. That's quite a comprehensive review/article and exactly what I was looking for. It'll take me awhile to digest all of that info.

Jerry -- Thanks for the comments. Do you tend to use the wet or dry scan method with you 35mm negs and slides?
I have not used the wet mount tray, it is sitting in a drawer in it's original packaging. I think that if it came with the fluid necessary for wet mounting, I would have tried it. I just never got around to ordering the fluid from a third party vendor. http://www.scanscience.com/
The fluid is a fast evaporating liquid that is placed under and on top of the negative.
The tray is essentially a piece of glass with a plastic frame around it and 2 metal handles. The idea is to put mounting fluid on the tray's glass, slide the negative on avoiding air bubbles, then more mounting fluid on top of the negative followed by a mylar sheet again placed to avoid air bubbles. The whole unit is then placed on the V750's glass for scanning.
The theory is that the fluid fills in any scratches and makes the glass & slide one focal plane, increasing resolution.
note, this is the same fluid used in high end drum scanners. I think it takes some skill to get it to work correctly, but it should improve the results you get from scanning large transparencies such as 4x5 and 8x10.
if you'll never do this, I guess there's no need for the fluid mounting kit.
Thanks everyone. You've all given me some great information and I really appreciate it. Now I need to review it, do a little more research then make my decision.
