for use with my 30D, battery grip and a 10-22mm lens. I want the legs because they are ultra-short and the head because it looks like it'll make portrait shots easy. But I'm worried that the whole lot will keel over if I stick the camera off to the side in portrait.
With that lightweight of a tripod, you really don't want to cantilever the camera out away from the center of gravity. I'd recommend something like a Markins Q3 or RRS BH25 with an L bracket on your camera. Using this, your camera would be centered over the tripod in portrait mode.
Another thing to think about is the 1540T or the 1550T. They are also short (shorter) when collapsed and are much more stable.
The 530 is sort of a tabletop tripod writ large. The other two are regular tripods.
You get a lot more capability for about 8 ozs in weight and 2" in closed length. If you make the legs the same length as the 0530, I'm sure they will be more stable. But if you need the wt and the length then the 0530 is it.

Yes it's a tabletop tripod. And the lenght is only 67 cm with the center column fully extended. And a lot less without the center-column.
the head is a series 2 head and the tripod a series 00 tripod. So te head is too big for the tripod.
