I'm looking for any tips or suggestions for finding space to rent on an "as needed" basis for portrait gigs (I'm primarily a wedding and location portrait photographer). I am expanding and getting a lot of headshot requests and studio portrait requests, so I'd like to find an alternative to renting a spot monthly.
I live on the south shore of Massachusetts and with the economy the way it is, there is a lot of office space. Does anyone approach people who lease space to use it adhoc while they are in between lessees?
Or otherwise, is there is a listing or directory for existing studios that rent out space as well?
There should be rental studios in your area, but you can try contacting commercial shooters in your area to see if they are interested. Being commmercial, the studio will be empty anyway at the times you'll more than likely be shooting.
check out pdn's photosource, otherwise google a bit, call other photographers or assistants. The Real estate route is usually working for a short term lease or for daily shoots if a client is involved (magazine) and can be paid. best

As mentioned, best bet is a commercial shooters space as it is already outfitted. Going into empty space cold is a hassel for one shot. Not bad if you plan on doing a weeks worth there, but for a couple shots, you spend way too much time getting it ready and breaking down.
I am a commercial shooter and am in the process of rehabing a building for my studio, and have put serious thought of renting per day to portrait/wedding guys on on as needed basis.

I do this now, but I have 2 bays.
One's for rental and one's mine/rental. I justed posted picks og my side on the "show your studio" thread.
