After tried 2 copies of 50/1.2L, i gave up, and bought this 50/1.4 from B&H again, way out of focus on all my three bodies out of the box,
sent it to Canon, NJ, back today, WOW, surprised me a lot, absolutely more than usable sharp @ f/1.4, on both 1D Mark II N and 1D Mark III.
Here's one with Mark III, @ f/1.4, shot JPG large, Picturestyle--standard, no editting, downsized in CS3 for upload.
you can view the full size image with the link, let me know if it's sharp Center focus point on the FIRST "K" http://www.pbase.com/peterlee_usa/image/85847785/large.jpg
And it really is dreamy, that's the main difference between the f/1.2 and the f/1.4; the L has more contrast wide open. Frankly though, I rather like the halation at f/1.4 and f/1.6 on the cheaper 50mm. It's the one lens I'll never sell.
And like you, I had to send mine back to Canon before it would focus right.

I have sold about 4 copies of the 50/1.4 here, all perform well, i always want the 50mm lens, but don't use it too much, so sold them all, but after sold the 50mm, always want another one
So this one will stay in my bag, no sale any more....
Here's two shots, straight out of the camera as JPEGs, default sharpening, for y'all to compare. All the white balance presets sucked, so these are AWB and wrong.
My particular copy is as good as anything else I've got with AF accuracy. Slower, but not that slow. A similar comparison with the 50/1.2 would be illuminating. What's a thousand extra buy you, I wonder?
Forgive me but can you guys at least have the courtesy to step outside and get a shot of a flower or something a bit more imaginative then your desk junk.
You spend a bundle on gear and then post images of desk junk.

Ok
Here's one for you, @ f/1.4 on Mark III
Shot JPG large, standard picturestyle, center focus in IS
Again, forgive me but a collective billion dollars worth of photographic gear and the best one can expect is a brick wall or portrait of a box of shuttlecocks?
Please, do not take offense in my above and instead, see the irony of my comment. It just struck me as odd that folks spending the dough they do, would want to project the best image possible as opposed to the worst images possible; otherwise, why have the gear? So one can understand my above, being old school, I'm about the image gear can give us.
