Useful info, thanks. You might want to fix the x-axis on your normalized RAW MTF graph (goes from f2.8-11).For alternatives to this lens you might also want to mention the exemplary Zuiko 90/2 Macro and the nice Zuiko 85/2 (about the same size and price as the Zeiss 85/2.8, but a whole stop faster).

I came very close to buying the C/Y Zeiss 85/1.4 MM, and then ended up with a Zuiko 90/2 almost by chance. The Zuiko 90/2 is a steller lens. I've also had the Zuiko 85/2 and found it to be a great little lens as well (though non-macro and not as sharp at f2).

you2,
In what sense is Planar ZA (Sony/Minolta mount) different from older C/Y mount Planar 85mm (aside from having a different barrel design)? Could you share your observations?

Well, the ZA is autofocus, with 8 elements in 7 groups.

The ZF is manual focus, with 6 elements in 5 groups.

Ergo, it's a completely different optical design. (Just like the Contax N version of the Planar 1.4/85 was quite different from the C/Y version.)

the Contax N is autofocus, with 10 elements in 9 groups

I think it's safe to say the the C/Y, N, ZA and ZF/ZS are all different designs

CVickery,
That's a helpful link - thanks.

Speaking of different designs - has anyone had any experience with the anniversary version of Planar 55mm (the f/1.2 variant?). These seem to be as rare as 85mm f/1.2 anniversary and I have always wondered if 55mm Planar is more of a collector's item then a lens worth choosing over its slower cousins, the f/1.4 and the f/1.7. If you have hands on experience with this lens, please share your thoughts...
