Why couldn't you buy it off BS forum, you could almost certainly get it all back if you decide the lense is not for you.
But I think you will end up keeping it
I know that if I were to buy one i would buy a 2.8 one.....But i certainly don't have the money to buy either unless I could get a REALLY good deal? Most games are held at night for some reason this one is moved up? The 2.8 would be used for all sports I do. Football, baseball, volleyball, basketball, etc
The small f/5.6 aperture works against this lens for football because it's much harder to separate the players from the background or other players. An f/2.8 with much smaller DOF and still deadly sharp is what many sports pros use for that reason.
I'm not sure how well your XT AF will perform for that role, however. It's not exactly a sports camera.
I have a friend who shoots GA Tech day games w/ a 20D and a 400 5.6. I am often amazed @ the sharpness of the lens and the quality bg blur. He obtains a good number of keepers.
I use the 400 5.6 for football (Aussie Rules) quite often. No, you wont get the background seperation of a 2.8 lens, but a lot of us cant afford one of those.

or i could just borrow my neighbors 2x converter and shoot at 5.6 with slower AF speed? I remember i didnt like using it with my rebel, maybe the 1dmkIIN will be better with it?
how about renting a lens? any recommendations on places
