you don't need a UV filter, but it's nice to have one for situations where mist mat get on the front element...............other than that, i never use one.

if you have a tripod, you may consider getting a plate for the ring to mount it up on your pod.

congrats on getting this lens, and be prepared to get even more addicted to L glass.......

Don't have second thoughts about this lens, its amazing. If funds permit though, you should consider the IS version.

yeah..i read about the 24-70 having much problems and many were sent back for calibration..it's sad sometimes cause you pay so much for it. i was considering this but i figured i needed the length, thus the 70-200. what do you normally shoot with the 24-70? do you have a website i could visit to see your photos?i was told that the 24-70 complements the 70-200, do you agree? thanks again for your advise. Btw, how do i tell the shop guy that i need the plate to mount my lens on tripod?

You need a filter to complete the weather resistance and an inexpensive uv is easier to replace than a front element.

Very nice and convenient lens to use, enjoy,

Tom

The 2.8IS is weather sealed without a filter

I'm another member of the no-filter camp. But be sure to use the rigid lens hood instead. It offers mechanical protection as well as optical protection.

If you are buying from a reputable dealer then the rigid hood and tripod ring are supplied with the lens, so there is nothing else needed to get except perhaps a 77mm circular polarizer filter if you don't already have one.

Thanks a lot!

Yes, some of those shots were taken with the 85mm f/1.8. Other lenses I used for that wedding were the 50mm f/1.4, the Canon 100mm macro, and the 17-40 f/4L.

I believe that flickr shows the EXIF info on the side of each picture so you can see which lens I used for each photo if you like.

As for my gear, thank you...I just recently added the 24-70, 70-200 f/2.8 IS, and the 135L. I am gearing up for next year's wedding season.

True, as is the 24-70. What surprised me is that the new 50mm f/1.2L needs a filter to complete the weather resistance. As do the 16-35 and the 17-40 which is common knowledge though.

The 135 2.0L is a stellar portrait lens. Some regard it as having the best bokeh of all the Canon lenses.
