I just received a new Canon 70-200 F4L IS and Canon 24-105 F4L IS. When I switched on the IS on the 70-200 the USM noise is much louder than the 24-105. I stayed on approx 1-2 seconds after each shot. It bothers me a lot
Does anyone have this similar problem on this brand new lens? Is it normal for this motorized noise at this loud level?
Please advice. Thanks
If it's anything like the 2.8IS it's normal - bigger lenses will typically make more noise when IS kicks in - more stuff to move. 24-105 is near silent in comparison to my 2.8IS
I also have the EF-S 17-85 for the D20. It has the lowest noise near silent. The 24-105 is a little bit louder than 17-85 but it's at the acceptable level for my ear. The 70-200 in a quiet room area, the other person whom I will be photographed is also noticed of the motorized noise.
I probably should bring it the a camera shop near me to compare with other IS 70-200 F2.8L IS and F4L IS.
It's not necessarily the size of the lens that determines the amount of noise. My 28-135's IS is noisier than its USM motor... indeed it's noisier than some of my non-USM lenses! My 100-400, on the other hand, is quiet. So quiet I can't tell it's on unless it's very quiet and I concentrate on the lens.
Personally I prefer the noisier IS. I've shot with my 100-400 with the IS off sometimes without even knowing.
Have both 24-105 + 70-200 IS lens - the 24-105 is so quiet that I have to dbl. check switch position before use - not so w/70-200 - sucker is loud.... I like it like it like that!!! keep in focus. Ed K.
