Every day, my daughter fills our house with beautiful music coming from this mechanical marvel. It really is amazing how these little wooden hammers so accurately transmit the feel from the pianist's hands to the strings.
It is a marvel. My daughter does the same. I have neverr looked inside hers and it does need a serious tuning. I did enjoy looking into my grand father's baby grand.

Ed, this is truly a mechanical marvel!! Can you imagine the beauty and emotions this marvel has evoked in our entire civilization. A left brained mechanical invention, to provide us with so much right brained creativity in this world. How much love has been ignited by beautiful songs. Ahhhhhh..... A great job of making an interesting photo out of what might have been a very repetitive boring shot.

Ed, nice shot of an amazing instrument. I wish I had some musical talent because this would be my instrument of choice. Glad you can enjoy this in your own home.. with your daughter at the keyboard, you must be proud. Thanks for sharing and good luck!
Nice shot, Ed. That looks like a very peculiar chord that's being struck. It looks like it would be rather dissonant. Any photos of musical instruments I love - especially when they are done well. Bravo!

Hi Chrisitan - I really would have liked to get a photo of the hammers from an underside view. Very clever little devices.

Thanks Jane - I so agree that this and other 'mechanical' musical instruments have made immeasurable contributions to world culture. That's what drew me to this idea - the combination of mechanics and art.
It would have been nice to get deeper into the piano to capture a more detailed photo of the little hammer mechanisms, but, oh well... there is only so far I will go for a WA entry!

Thanks for the very nice comments Wilson - we do very much enjoy hearing her play. She has been taking lessons for about 8 years - actually gives lessons to younger students now - and has become a wonderful musician.

All the best,
Endre
Endre - I knew if anyone could bust me for the fake playing, it would be you! It was rather random key striking by me while the camera counted down to taking the shot, but not really too dissonant.
I found this piano at a used piano shop about 8 yrs. ago. It was fairly rough on the outside, but the soundboard and internal works were in great shape, and the sound is very rich. After hearing a few chords, I was sold, and after some refinishing work, it now looks wonderful as it sounds. It is about 60 yrs. old and going strong!
Very nice image for this WA Ed, and I especially like the composition and detail.
Keep that daughter playing (and your son doing that trumpet...that was my instrument)
Great job

Thanks Peter - yes, music is a big part of both of their lives; something that will stick with them forever.

Great shot Ed!
Thanks Jane - I really hoped to work more with the lighting this week and get a better shot, but too many other things came up and no time was left for fun and games!
So, I guess this will just have to do and we will see how it goes.
I agree with the above--great shot, and an excellent idea.
I had four years of classical piano... just enough to realize that it would take a lot of work to be able to play anything decent without half a month of preparation. So I took up drumming instead... it's much easier!

Thanks! Yeah - it takes a whole lotta' years and hard work to get good. I have been very proud of how my daughter stuck with it. We all benefit!
