Just got the Nikon 50mm 1.2 AIS lens from another FMer, and am playing with it on my D100. Does the internal metering not work at all with this lens? Even if I set the camera to Manual, the aperture setting always shows F -- --
I don't care about the manual focus, but I need some metering!
I would keep it, its a fantastic low light lens, I've had several folks walk up and wonder what that short bulbous lens was ;-) that and the 55 micro are my two favorite normal portrait lenses.
i dont know the specifics with the D100 but you should be able to spot meter and center weight meter as well. Just not matrix meter. Just adjust the Aperature manually. Its always going to read F-- but should meter.

if you won't believe Marc, which I highly recommend that you do , will you believe me ?
It will Not meter at All in any mode at any time with a AI or AIS lens
use your histograms. M mode and histograms preview, or just guestimate. Too bad the simpler bodies don't support the 30+ years of nikkor engineering. The D1 series, D1, D1X, D1H support most AI(s) lenses, minus matrix metering, centerweighted + spot & focus aid work just fine though.
But you can get by managing with the histogram previews.
Good luck, and kudos for a owning one of the great, brighter nikkors!
