tx ... I think that set A is a little better.
It is frustrating at smugmug because you can't download them into PS to do a quick switch.
They are very close. They both look good.
The reason I deleted the other post and reposted this is that the details of my camera settings, post processing, etc were getting lost in all the posts. And, I could tell from the traffic on smugmug that no one was looking at the gallery hardly and most everyone was looking at the two pics I posted in the thread.
The posted pics had 25meg of activity and the other 13 only had 1 meg of activity.
This should be interesting. I have 16 gig of bandwidth per month with smugmug and I've posted this thread here, on nikoncafe and on dpreview.
I'm watching bandwidth go at 2 meg per hit as people are looking. I'm curious how long it will take till it gets close to maxing out and I have to dump the pics.........
I think that a is the 17-55 and b the 18-200. The A photos have next to no chromatic abberation while the B photos do. This is noticable near the edges and at the transition from highlights to darker areas. This being said, the 18-200 looks prety good anyways, at least as good as my 18-70.
I have been surprised to see my previous post disappear... so here I am again... according to me A is the 17-55 and B the 18-200. A pictures are very clearly better (sharper and mainly in the corners) than B pictures. (I did not check systematically all pictures, I assume the results are consistent and that pictures are not mixed up). I also assume no PP has been done on any.
BUT all pictures are very reasonable and the 18-200 seems to be a VERY decent allround lens anyway. I'd like to know if things get much worse fully open @200mm (corner sharpness is important to me, things like CA can be corrected with appropriate PP)
You have got two pretty interesting toys
Yep, pics are not mixed up as I shot them in chronilogical order all 18-200vr first, then all 17-55dx next.
No PP done.
And, your post disappeared because I deleted original and started thread over with the changes I made. People were not looking at the galleries and were only looking at the two pics in the old post for the most part.

Now the fundamental question of the universe...
I ordered a 18-200VR and I will be travelling in a few weeks from now (as a tourist in the Carribean islands). Do I leave the 18-70 and 70-200 f2.8 at home ?
My travel kit would be 12-24 18-200 80-400 105...
What would you do?
I think the results were pretty close. It's obvious that the 17-55dx has a lead as everyone on FM and on Nikoncafe pegged it correctly. I knew right off the bat it looked better in most of the shots, but wanted to see if everyone else saw it too.
Now, take those 18-200vr shots of mine without having the 17-55dx comparable shots sitting there and tell me if they would be acceptable? I think so. I doubt anyone would know if you didn't tell them and you took care to shoot properly.
So, if I were traveling to the Carribean, I'd probably only take the 18-200 and maybe a 35 f2 or 50 f1.4. But, my reasoning would be security. I'd not feel comfortable trekking a ton of gear around down there. However, I guess it depends on where you are going. We went to Jamaica back in 2004 and beyond the property we were visiting, I'd not want to go out in public with $10k in camera gear. Our hotel had an armed security person posted about every 100 feet around the perimeter of the property and it was a Sandals property.
So, I guess it depends, but I'd sure think the lens could travel and do well as long as you are aware it is only about 80 to 90 percent as good as the f2.8 glass.

On dpreview.......................... ARE YOU CRAZY? hahahaha.
Yeah, it pretty much clicked off about 100meg of bandwith per hour since I posted it. I had to give in and give the answers and cut off the "original" size posting option just to slow it down. Not sure what happens if I exceed my bandwidth but I'm sure they will charge me for it most likely. Don't want that.

Tx ... thanks for taking the time and sacrificing the bandwidth. (next time skip dprephew )
Very good to see this comparo and very timely for many people . Good stuff!
No problem and if anyone wants the original of one of the shots from each lens, let me know and PM or email me your email and I'll get them sent over the weekend. Just keep in mind that full sized nef's will be large.
Well, I have a pro account with smugmug so I can't say if they are all the same but under mine when I go to customize gallery settings and one of the options is for originals and one is for large. You can allow or disallow them.

What is the res on the 'originals'? It looks like the pics have been downrezed.
edit: I just saw you comment about limiting the 'original' size view. How you do dat? I have smugmugy too. Great hosting site.
Can you tell which lens is Lens A and which lens is Lens B?

How is CA with the 18-200VR? I just picked one up but can't test it until tomorrow. Your thoughts on CA will help me to determine if mine has better or worse CA than one might expect.
