I buy and sell equipment all the time but I seem to have wound up with one D2X and one D2H. I am thinking about selling the D2H and buying a D2Hs instead of another D2X. I hope to be able to cover a wide range of events with these two cameras. Has anyone gone from the H to the S? Is there enough of a difference to justify the change? I saw a new D2Hs for $2500.00. What should a used one sell for? Thanks in advance for your response.
I'm in the market too for a clean/mint D2HS as well. I've seen them go anywhere from $USD 2,400 to $USD 2,800 depending on condition and extra items (EN-EL4, kirk bracket, etc). Brand new at B&H, they are $USD 3,200
Wonder if new D2HS prices will start to drop as the D200 seems to be a lot of camera for the money. Used D2H prices are ridiculously low now (I saw a mint one go for $1200 on FleaBay recently) and D2X prices seemed to have softened lately too.
Don't forget that PMA is right around the corner - I'm sure Fuji-Nikon-Canon have a few things up their sleeves that might affect pricing on used/exisiting equipment...
Used D2H models sell for $1200-$1500. I know cause I been looking for the past few weeks.
Anyone wanting a good lead for a used D2H can contact me. I can put you in touch with a couple reputable sellers.
I would have spent up to $2500 for a new D2Hs if I could have found one that low with a US warranty vs $1,700 for a new D200.
I did finally settle on a D2H (Demo).

is it just me or does it seem like no one cares about PMA this year? This is the first time i've even thought about it. Guess that means I'm happy with my gear

With Nikon releasing the D2x, D2HS, D200, D50, 18-200VR, plus some other stuff, 2005 has been a good year for us Nikonians. Not sure if Nikon has anything else to announce for PMA 2006, but ya never know - we all could be pleasantly surprised.
What'll be interesting to watch is if Canon announces a 20D replacement and if Fuji will announce an S3 successor. I personally would love to see an S4 - a Fuji SR CCD in a pro body.
February is not that far away. Wait and see, I suppose...
Nikon is clearly picking up some former Nikon dslr users who went off to Canon , the likes of which hasn`t been seen before because of Nikon`s attractive and well designed 2005 offerings.
Hoiwever, Canon is still riding high on top and if you check out Dpreview buying guide you will see Canon in a monstrous lead in the amount of recorded product interest clicks throughout their lineup.
It wouldn`t be any surprise whatsoever to see the 20D upgraded if only to keep the floodgates closed. Canon is definitely more than capable. Just when you think they might be bested is when they unload a blockbuster. They must have a shelf full of new offerings on hand and timed to release when the need arises.
John.
I'd be curious to know if there are any visible differences between the D2h and the D2hs ... especially in the noise department. I've heard some say yes, some say no. What's the deal?
There doesn't seem to be any reviews of the D2hs ... as if everyone passed them by.

Sure we care about the PMA this year. It's business. Nothing personal, just business( Santini 1984) The rooms went up 15% in Orlando, parking went to ten dollars a day, so we shuttle. Luckily we got a travel agent in our group and cut the rates in half of what the PMA wanted for their group. Travel agents know the deals.
Last years PMA was a dud in attendance, how bad?, I had fourteen unused drink tickets and almost couldn't give them away. What a waste of beer and wine. And there were less independent dealers attending because there are fewer left in the country. So there no real pressure to show since it's all orders on the Internet now. You can do that all year round.
If you look at the list of who is exhibiting, it's all software, hardware, batteries and aftermarket gadgets, lots of scrap booking, senior pics, and the film labs exhibits just get smaller, lots of kiosks and so forth.
When Mr. Ritz from Ritz and Wolf walked through, you thought it was the second coming. the genuflecting, the bowing and kisses thrown was nauseating. They represented 1500 stores and B&H and Adorama probably a good portion of the market thats left. You got something for them to buy for their stores you call on corporate. Just like Wally-Wart.
It's primarily a dealer show, very expensive to show at, and pressure forced Nikons hand this year not to wait. They finally came out of the stupor and realized like a guy who lives in the White House, don't make noise, you got no business. They lost market share to Canon and had to move. It was a rout.
I will predict the show will eventually have to go public (end -user) to survive as the amount of dealers declines every year.
Back to this year: Nikons got winners, you get past the bad press on the D2H, the big green on the D70 and keep rolling and don't worry about the timing for the PMA.
Nikon played a cooltrick this year. The D2H had a expanding problem, you swing out the D2HS, supposedly a different model. The D70 goes kafluey and you come out with the D70S. Clever, just rename the bad batch, fix it and call it a new model. Good Marketing cut your losses on a bad apple. Rename the apple and just pick them earlier.
But few dealers are that excited about Orlando, the show grows quantum-ly in Vegas. If they hadn't combined last years show with the Printing Show (a new division) and the Framing show the PMA would be 1/3 of it's size. It's only because of combining with other shows that it filled about half the hall in Orlando. I expect the Digital Coffee Dispenser group to join PMA next year because of the shrinking exhibitors list in the photo end. At one time the PMA was a Photography Show. It has morphed. Or shall we say morphined.
Just before digital took off 'in the older days" one show we attended in Vegas took four days to cover. This one I'll be outa there by Tuesday.

I agree , last year Nikon hit with the D2X and Canon "wupped" up twenty models and lenses and accessories. Expect the same this year since the 5D came early. Waiting for shows to show is not whats happening in this volatile market place.

The D2Hs was definitely passed by, but shouldn't have been. If you look at the specs, (AND THIS IS JUST MY OPINION) its essentially a D2X with a 4MP sensor and minus the high speed crop mode (but you get 8fps all the time). If it was actually included in the FM review, I would write a review for it.
I can't compare it to the D2H (since I've never used one), but its high ISO is better than that of the D70 by at least a stop. When I had the D70, I felt the need to run everything above ISO 800 through Neat Image. With the D2Hs, I never use Neat Image at ISO 1600 and lower, and only rarely at ISO 3200. Its not just less noise, but the noise that exists is less-objectionable. I could post some samples if you'd like... although its hard to make a comparison without shooting the same subject/conditions.
Dustin, yeah I'd be interested in a sample just for knowing sake. I always found the lack of reviews on this model to be odd - given that it is such a capable camera.
If you've got something at iso 1600 i'd be curious to compare it to a D2h file. Perhaps if you shoot something generic that can be duplicated close enough I can shoot the same with the D2h and we can see.

I think the D2HS is Nikon's best kept secret. The above quote is very true - and you get a great high ISO camera. With the ISO boost, you also get access to ISO 3200 and 6400. Not bad in a pinch...
Actually the image sample from the D2Hs looked as good or maybe better than the D2X in this comparison.
I`ve seen this comparison before and being it`s done by Ron Reznick has to make it even more valid but the many hundreds of image samples (including many full sized) I`ve viewed on different sites don`t show much if any IQ difference between the D2H and the D2Hs.
That said , my preference would be the D2Hs but not for twice the dough.
I can be quite satisfied with 4 MP images for under $1,500 but at $3,000 I`d have to seriously consider the real deal (D2X) for only a grand more.
What the heck, that`s where were all gonna be in a year or two anyway.
John
I have to agree with John above. I put a lot of weight on the Reznick comparison in the link posted earlier, and it convinced me that the D2H was a bargain. While the S is clearly better from that comparison, still being only 4mp and a lot more money, I got the H.
And btw, I'm loving it - switched from Canon for it.
Be careful of grey market nikons.....a good deal on a gr.mkt d2h isn't a good deal...it's not like repairing an n90...finding a place to fix it is a little like getting an audience with the Pope..it WILL be difficult .. .BEWARE!...I have a usa warranteed d2h and I love it!...I have a d200 on order and I know I'm going to covet it also. Will I get rid of the d2h?....Am I going to give up the 8 fps or the great file size?....I don't think so. zane
i had a sample shot at 1600 iso handheld. the noise was there but it would have otherwise been a long exposure at 200. 1600 iso is not bad for the d2hs. not bad at all
