p.1 #1 · Focus lock on MarkII and 20D

Shot an A league baseball game last night with a fellow who is a pro. First time ever for me, I am not a sports shooter. Found out really quickly that there is a lot to learn in sports photography and I have new admiration for some of those spectaclular shots we see in SI and other mags.

One of my problems is that I don't understand and don't know how to use focus lock on either of my cameras (MarkII and 20D) Obviously it helps to focus lock on say second base if you have a runner at first and say two outs. I tried using what I think is the focus lock button (the one marked with an * (asterisk) but it did not seem to work.

Custom function 4 on the MarkII give some options for exposure lock/focus lock but I found it a bit confusing.

Do you have to keep pressing the * button to focus lock?

What is the bes way to do it?

Any other tips or advice on this subject would be greatly appreciated

Focus lock does not work in Servo. You can stop AF Servo (depending on the CF mode your in) but it won't necessarily be in focus. True Focus lock is only available in One-Shot AF by depressing the shutter release half way.
