p.1 #1 · Nifty Fifty Headshot

Different... I usually use a longer focal length. 50mm f1.8 @ f2, Nikon D300. Shot in a parking lot.

Cool shot. A little more DOF could get the right eye in sharp focus, but this looks nice.

I used to shoot a lot with the 50 1.8. I preferred to either have both eyes totally in focus, or have on eye in focus and the other drastically out of focus. The easiest way to set this up is by the focal plane and the plane of the subjects eyes. For both eyes in focus, face needs to be perpendicular to the camera. You can also close aperture a little. IIRC I did headshots at f2.8-f4 with close subject distance.

I had shot two; one further away (more DOF) and this. Was curious whether I had let the other eye get too soft or not. I was focused on his right eye, do you think the Lens FF a bit (i.e. the texture in his jacket being so tack sharp on the right).

Thanks,
Eric
