In my constant persuit of bettering my portrait skills my children often pay the price, this time it is lizzy (elizabeth) age: almost 7, as she keeps telling us.
comments would be appreciated.
thanks jim.
All shots are with canon 40d, canon 70 to 2002.8L with off cam flash
Sweet expression in the first, the first needs a little more fill on the shadow side ... just enough to pick up a little detail in her right eye ... the hot spots on her nose, above the lip and on the cheek in the second should be toned down or avoided next time ... and the expression in the last says she is quite annoyed at something .... also maybe a little less light on her legs and skirt in the last ... I do like the processing in the last one.
thanks I seem to take so many pics of them (both my girls) that when they see the camera they have about a 30 second attention span so its tough to get them with-out the Fake smile. I see I need to spend a little more time in the pp would help?
Agree with Butch - light up the catchlight on the shadow side. Maybe the main light is too far camera right as well?
#2 has that bright (sun, I think) on her nose. It may be just a preference of mine, but the dark backgrounds - as in #2 - give me a sense of almost shooting at night. In photography, colours have different meaning or sense to them and often darks have a "feel" as well - sometimes sinister or forboding. For that reason, I'd choose to lighten the background some. Don't take this as a major thing but rather something for discussion.
