I have just upgraded from CS3 toCS4 and one thing is driving me nuts. Whenever I open a new image, it is centered in the window which means the panels cover part of it and there is a wide gap around it. I convert to Float in Window mode and the image jumps to the left upper corner where I want it but then needs to be resized to fill the space. Is there any way to make all images open in CS4 in the float in windows mode and expanded to fill the window? I have checked Preferences but do not see anything. Thanks.

I don't understand your description of the problem. If the panels are covering part of the image, how can there be a wide gap around the image? Post a screen shot so we can see what you're talking about.
In CS4 you will see an icons on the same line as the menus. The second icon from the right controls how your windows are configured. Try a few options that are offered and see if one will do what you need. I'd stay in tabbed mode and use fit to screen or use the hand tool to reposition the image. Good luck.
Thanks guys. I found out the problem. I had checked open in tabbed mose in Preferences. Unchecking that solves the problem. Unfortunately, it appears tabbed mode will not position the image where I want it.
