p.1 #1 · 'Not the right kind of document'

Hi guys, I am using photoshop CS2, and recently upgraded to the D700. I can't seem to open my lossless 12bit NEF files. I just get the 'not the right kind of document' error message. Do I need to download an updated NEF plugin or something from somewhere? Or will 12bit Lossless Nef files simply just not open in CS2 - Period.

They won't open in CS2. This is one of the reasons I'm still using a D200. I'm cheap and I don't want to buy yet another version of Photoshop to use the ACR in Photoshop, which I would have to do to use the D300 or D700.

I think you could download Nikon View from the website and use that to open the D700 files. There is a BASIC editor in View but I have found it to be incredibly slow, at least on my computer. But...you could then convert them and then open them in CS2, or...but another RAW editor, like NX2, Capture One, etc.

you need to make sure you have the latest PS updates to handle the files coming from the D700. The D700 came out after CS2. Just go to adobe.com and get the latest ACR update.

Oops, maybe I spoke too soon. Then open the file in NX or NX2 and then open the tiff in CS2.

I've just downloaded the latest DNG converter, and it looks like I'll have to convert to DNG format, and go from there if I want to use Lossless NEF. Either that or I'll just have to continiue to use NX2 to adjust exposure in PP, as well as white balance etc. and then just convert to TIFF to open in CS2 for further editing like I've been doing so far.

Is there any downside to the latter? I.e open the Lossless NEF files in NX2, perform basic edits like picture control, white balance, exposure comp, and then export to TIFF, for further editing in CS2?
