Hope my little how-to might be interested for those who in the same boat or going to join us soon:-)

I had finished a project for a pens manufacture and wrote a little tutorial on how i did it with image examples and lighting schema:

p.s. Having the reflections going different directions is giveaway that your posted shot is a composite.

In the L.A. market where I work the art director for the pen company would shoot this without even hiring a photographer.

A simple Red Wing Cocoon sold by Calumet for $79 would provide a soft even light tent around the product. The background, highlights on the product and the reflections would be added by a production assistant in photoshop.

^^ Yes, it can be done in Red Wing Cocoon, why not? I do not use such devices, but art director may do :-)

But you can't use it for this one, especially if you shoot 100+ pens (meaning no heavy post-production allowed):

In Atlanta market, small companies (like the one I did pens for) which does not have art directors and production assistants hire photographers for such work.
