p.1 #1 · 5D Mark II viewfinder vignetting

I just bought the 5D mark II. I am shooting with a 50mm 1.4 USM. When I attach the lens and look through the viewfinder, I can't see the entire viewfinder because there is a dark ring that surrounds its edges. It does not affect my pictures, but I am worried that something might be wrong. Right now I don't have another lens to test it with. Has anyone else experienced this or can anyone explain what is going on here? Thank you very much.

Are you sure your face is close enough to the camera? I've noticed that the 5DII doesn't have the most forgiving eye relief. You really need to cram your eye in the VF to see all the corners.

haha. i just crammed my face and eye as hard as i could. its not that. I should try to use my point and shoot to illustrate the effect.

This is what it looks like when I get my point and shoot lens as close into position as my eye would be.

You can see the effect, but just imagine that you are seeing that it does that all the way around the viewfinder.

You picture looks like the focusing screen is removed from your 5D. Do you see a circle surrounded by the rectangles of the focusing points?

That sounds like it is a possibility because when i focus I can't see any depth of field at all. and yes, I see a circle surrounded by the focusing points. I have no idea what to do. I bought this camera new at best buy!

Strange indeed! You can clearly see the focusing points in the VF though in the picture shown above.

Yes, the screen is definitely there. Maybe it's shifted out of position? Check to be sure it's installed correctly or not loose:

Thanks for your responses guys. I'm glad I didn't shrug it off because I went to best buy and got a new one tonight and there was definitely something very wrong with the old one. Cheers!

I'm glad you got a new one that's right, I'm just wondering exactly what was wrong with the old one.
