p.1 #1 · Dust behind D700 lcd screen

Hi i have noticed that there is some dust behind the tempered glass cover of my D700 LCD screen. Not very much, but if you look closely it is visible (when the LCD is off). I've contacted Nikon support and they told me that it's not normal for a D700. I should send it in for repair/check up. They told me that it will take about 4 to 6 weeks! I don't like that at all. So i'm wondering: what's your experience with this? Should i really send it in for just a bit of dust behind my LCD screen?

No i don't want to get a D3s...

I personally wouldn't bother. If it doesn't affect you viewing the images then no. On the other hand, if this sort of thing bothers you, better to get it fixed sooner rather than later when you might REALLY not want to give it up for a those few weeks.

Or wait till the warranty is almost up, with about a month to go, and have it sent in then?

I wouldn't bother the dirt, but I would bother the question: where did it come from?

Raymond,

I suggest to do it NightOwl's way: don't bother for now and send the camera in about month before the waranty expires.

Better solution: get a NPS-membership - it's a relief and huge step forward. In case you need a sponsor, PM me.

I had one I bought new and noticed within a couple days there was dust behind the lcd. At first, I thought that it was just the way the light was hitting the lcd and that it wasn't too bad. Within two days and some more shooting, it was much worse. Since the camera was purchased a week earlier, my dealer took it back.
Definitely keep an eye on it, as it could get worse if the seal is bad. I would return it for warranty work if it were mine.

I had a similar issue with my D700. If dust is behind the glass I'd be concerned that it's properly sealed. My D700 actually had a haze behind the glass after a while. I sent it to Nikon and the repair took two weeks. I was bummed to be without it...but happy to have it fixed !

I have 2 700s. I've have one about a year with no dust in the LCD. The other, about 6 months old filled with dust in the first month. I would like to have it removed but not with the downtime and expense.

sorry to bring up an old thread, but i just saw two brand new D700 exhibiting this problem. has anyone considered putting some silicon to fill the gap between the lcd cover (not the removeable plastic cover but the actual LCD cover afixed on the body) and the body?

p.1 #14 · Dust behind D700 lcd screen

aah my old thread revived

i haven't send in my D700 to fix the "problem". The few dust particles are still there i believe. But i havent seen the amount grow. Camera works great, even used it in the rain. It's no problem for me. Maybe it's because of the fact that the compartment in my bag is rather thight. The back of the camera rubs against the fabric of the bag. Maybe due to that tight fit i have a few dust particles behind the lcd. it's hardly visible and only in the outer corners. I don't bother... Kitting the D700 lcd is going to look ugly don't you think?

i was thinking that a thin layer can be pushed into the gap to seal off the screen and the excess can be easily wiped off before it dries. though, now come to think of it, if the LCD is not sealed properly, it's probably not a good idea in case too much gets pushed underneath.

maybe using some foam tape or silicon on the inner edges of the removeable plastic cover will help prevent dust from getting in?

if it's realy such great deal you might be better of by getting it fixed. I've just checked my camera and it's almost invisible. I have to use a flash light on a certain angle to see it. So i don't mind. If it's worse or it botters you, you should get it fixxed. I don't think taping the plastic lcd protector to you camera body is a good idea.
