p.1 #1 · Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Hey Guys,

Here are some shots from a local tournament this weekend. I find this to be an extremely difficult sport to shoot but I got a few that I am quite happy with. Please let me know what you think.

I think they turned out pretty good. I know it can be difficult in these conditions when you've got to use available lighting, and those red mats are casting off their color on the faces and gi's of the participants.

I like the 3rd pic the best, and how the man standing is trying to caveman his way out of the armbar.

Hi y'all,

A bit late to the party, but I am starting to shoot some jiu jitsu at my academy and hopefully at some tournaments as they come to Portland.

I shot a tournament with my 70-200L F/4 on my old Rebel Xti and the results were not great. I've since moved over to a Nikon D3 setup and am trying to figure out what focal length/speed lens I am going invest in to get the most out of jits events.

Any thoughts? @StalfoS, what lens did you shoot this tourney with?

I invented the "Puertorican Necktie" and taught it to a BJJ world champion, and photographed it.

lets hope he doesn't roll to his left, then you'd be in a bad spot :-)

It's a neck crank on the back, and a choke on the front. If you're unfortunate enough to get caught in this position, you're already screwed. Even when it's only partially on and your opponent rolls, they're rolling into a gogo.

So....what kind of focal length do you all think is ideal for shooting tourneys, etc.?

A few shots from our Open Mat today. Really brought home just how much I want/need the new 70-200 VRII These were shot with my 50mm f/1.8 and my cheaply acquired 28-85 f/3.5-4.5. No post editing.

My Academy has nightmarish (for photography) bright yellow walls and very poor natural lighting, which make shooting a bit more of a challenge, especially with my limited glass.

Would love feedback.
