p.1 #1 · Selling / licensing a photo

I only take photos for the joy of it with no plans of ever selling them. Basically I want to keep this a hobby and don’t want to start being driven by money. I know I can execute self control and all that and still sell them, but it’s just a choice that I’ve made. Anyways, my Dad has a friend who owns a small coffee shop where he books Celtic bands to play and he wants to use one of my photos on a flyer to promote a concert series he is doing. Based on my position and the fact that I don’t want any credit or exposure given other than “Photo used by permission” on the flyer. How would you suggest I figure out what to charge? I don’t know how many flyers are being printed.

Thanks,
Dalyn

There is no easy answer to this one. However, you could just donate it with mention of credit. Or ask for a meal at the coffee shop! It all depends how much your dad's friend is willing to give you, what is the value of the image for him? It is worthwhile to find out. Is he going to generate significant revenues because of the promotion?

Hope it help, JY

Get the program called ' fotoquote'. Every photographer should own this program!

I'm sure there is a full stock price for your or one it could be compared to but I doubt they would be willing to pay that. In you're in the favor catagory they might be expecting it for pratically free. If the coffe shop is charging an entry fee you should be compensated for it.
Questions to aks are how many, how big, how long will the series run,
Is your time worth less than their time?
How serious do they take you.
You should go for a little more than what they are expecting that way you add value to your name as a photographer.

I would do what you have to just to your photo on there so you can use it as marketing tool for the future.
If you end doing it for free don't do it again for free.

Most people looking for photos are running a business and know how to negotiate a lot better than a photographer that doesn't know what a photo is worth.
