p.1 #1 · Netbook in field

Has anyone experimented with using a netbook as a lightweight portable for storing and converting/editing a job as you shoot it?

I am looking at getting a Linux netbook and using dcraw/gimp. Is 16 bit usable in gimp/dcraw yet?

Also, does anyone know of a good free programme for use on ubuntu-netbook or Linpus with simple one-key shortcuts for looking through thousands of jpegs and labelling them as keepers/trash and renaming/moving them accordingly?

I use a 1Ds3. Is a netbook going to cope running gimp on a 21 Mpixel file? Even at 16-bit?

i've been looking at the samsung nd10 and it appears to be designed better then the rest so gets through stuff quicker, comes with xp but can be osx too and vista sp1 runs fine. some are using dreamweaver and cs4 so lightroom might work. faststone defiantly runs 600 pix high and is still usable, as is view nx. stick in 2gigs of ram and a partitioned 320gbn WD Scorpio black and i cant see any reason a quick sort of jpgs wont be a problem. its worth the extra few quid, check one out in dixons.

we went to nz in september. net books were a new fangled item with little choice. didnt go linux as they are all (?) ssd.
picked up the advent as that was the best at time. shot raw and jpeg. only tweaked the raws for fun. that was with cs3. 1dsmk2 files 16bit were fine to process individually. also took two external 120ghd as backup.

best thing ive bought for the photography for a while. one of the new ones, maybe the above samsung / or ? has a 160ghd & dual core, currys had that.

I use the 10" Advent 4211 (MSI Wind rebadged) and it's great for quick sorts in the field and backup on the 80Gb HDD.I got the larger battery though for 3.5hr power.

hmmm. not finding that to be the case so far. gimp is handling 21 megapixel jpegs nicely. haven't got as far as dcraw yet, but all seems good so far.

I use a Mini-Note for review in the field. Works fine. I'm not trying to process 1000 image batches though. opening individual images in ACR was fine LR was a fail.

dcraw working ok on 1Ds3 raws, but haven't mastered colour control yet. Imagemagick and gimp fine too. I won't run the Windows virusfarm. It's one of my rules. Life is short enough already. I see that people are having success running Mac OSX on netbooks.

Haven't even thought about calibration yet. I don't intend to use it for accurate colour processing. I bought an Acer Aspire One with 1Gbyte of RAM and a 120Gbyte drive. All looks good so far, except wi-fi a bit hit and miss. I'm thinking of putting Mac OS X on it, but I think that makes wi-fi even trickier.

dcraw/ufraw seem to do 16bit output just fine, but gimp-2.6.2 doesn't seem to like reading 16bit files, even with gegl turned on (if anyone has additional info on this, please speak up).

You might consider Mirage - I haven't gotten round to trying it myself, but it has custom functions that look like they could do what you want.

Also, I have experimented just a little with using exiftool to make jpeg images from raw camera files - it seems to work (and give something larger than the tiny thumbnail). Depending on your situation, it may be a lot faster for when you need to run through a large pile of images.

Not enjoying UFRaw much. The main screen extends beyond the edge of the monitor, so you can't see some of the buttons. Also finding it hard to get realistic colour. The auto/defaults for colour and exposure curves seem unusable and the interface is so slow and clunky that it's a pain. Overall a poor user experience.

You can change the image magnification and alter the size fo the windows - a bit hokey.

As for color and exposure, what are you looking for? (less suck obviously, but how would you want it changed?)
