Sorry for silly question if the answer should be obivous, but I am about to splurge on my first non-ai lens and just wanted to make sure. I cannot see why not...? Isnt the mount physically the same anyway?
Not a silly question at all. It depends on the actual lens. Some non AI nikkors have a rear protrusion which will need to be cut off in order to not physically interfere with the 5D when mounted. I ran into an issue with the old 20mm 3.5 Nikkor-UD and had to cut the protrusion off in order for it to mount. So, there can be issues with specific lenses.

Also, if it's a fast lens, ie f/1.4 or even f/2.0, there's the possibility of the rear element hitting the 5D mirror. This is more prevalent with fast SMC Takumar lenses (particularly the 50mm f/1.4) and some Zeiss lenses, but it can still occur with some Nikons. You can find more info about this at www.cameraquest.com under their "Adapters" section.
