Actually, after a 3-month self-imposed photographic exile, I'm re-introducing myself to my gear. I thought I'd practice focusing on a mobile object and see what pushing the ISO got me (in training for a visit from the grandkids next month).
Resistance is futile!
Cute. Cute. Cute.
And its not even a grandchild pic!
Sharpness, noise look good. Expression is great.
Compositionally, not crazy about the crop. Could use less body on left, maybe more on right.
Welcome Back!!!
Scott
I purchased a used D2x (in way over my head, I know) and have experienced first hand its reported unforgiving responses to poor technique and exposure. For me, focus is always an issue - a cable release and tripod are about the only way I've really nailed focus - hence the practice (and I don't have any VR glass).
Plus, I wanted to see what ISOs above 400 produced - I'd say this is acceptable, no NR was applied, but do have a question perhaps someone can answer: a review by Thom Hogan states that for anything above ISO 800, RAW produces unacceptable results, rather shoot jpgs (for a D2x that is). Why?

Lacks a little "snap" perhaps?
His 'sitting' fee is very reasonable though...
deeprblue: I don't understand what you mean by washed out colors? Help me understand.
Here's a portion of the Exif - I accidentally bumped the exposure +1/3 when in fact seem to get the best results at -1/3.
I applied a Gaussian blur to everything but head and ears - maybe a little heavy handed - and this work monitor sucks so it is difficult to judge contrast and colors here (then again colors are not my strength either).
# Exposure Time (1 / Shutter Speed) = 4/1000 second = 1/250 second = 0.004 second
# Lens F-Number/F-Stop = 25/10 = F2.5
# ISO Speed Ratings = 640
# Exposure Bias (EV) = 2/6 = 0.33
# Max Aperture Value (APEX) = 16/10 = 1.6 Max Aperture = F1.74
# Metering Mode = pattern / multi-segment (5)
# Light Source / White Balance = unknown (0)
# Flash = Flash did not fire
# Focal Length = 85/1 mm = 85 mm
OT - if you can use the Firefox browser, it has an Exif viewer plug-in.
Cute indeed. The light was not agressive here. I also like very much these colors.
A certain relationship to pastels. I am able actually to get the same results in
terms of color with a Canon 5D.
Early evening sunlight, and I tried to portray the actual colors of his coat. We call him a 'stealth' dog because for being so big and clumsy, once he gets into the woods he is neither seen nor heard.
