Check this out, New D700 (but grey market) from what looks to be legit seller.
Price is $2418 and with 8% microsoft cashback rebate, price would be $2224.
I'd say so. That $400 would cover several repairs at your local camera store (and mine never need repairs to begin with).
Some people will place value in the US body enough to deter them from this, but I think its a good deal. Too bad cashback isn't at a reasonable amount.
PS - FM doesn't like ebay links, they get cut off.
Use search.live.com as search engine, then search for something like "gold bullion" and you should see a link to ebay with 8% cashback. Once you click through that you can order anything which is BIN and payed through paypal to get the 8%.
Finding the search phrase that works takes some experimenting and retrying to get the 8% rebate thru ebay to show up.
I for one don't think it's worth it. Sensor problem? Back LCD issue? That $400 is nothing. Oh, and that's assuming you can even get the issue fixed. Tough electrical problem and you think you're local camera store is going to be able to repair it? Not likely.

Well, my local place is a Nikon official place (its where in-warranty work goes too) so they can do anything from a full lens rebuild to a tuneup. Your mileage may vary.
If you do a live.com search for D700, then click the top link for eBay, then go to this auction, you can save another $200 bucks with live search cashback (ATM, its 30%, so for instance a LX-3 is only 343 dollars... )
$2250 for a new D700 is stupidly low, add in a Mack or Squaretrade warranty and its grey-marketness doesn't seem so bad now....
