He's just asking what thoughts you'd have on that kind of sensor. Not speculating on specific features or details of any potentially upcoming product.
Personally, I'd love to see it. There are pros and cons to the square form factor, but a square is what will capture the greatest part of the light coming from a lens, so there's some logic to that. Also does away with the whole "vertical grip" paradigm, and twisting the camera. Just crop to your needs after the fact. A luxury perhaps, but a nice one.
And ah, the landscapes. The detail. The large prints. And the high-speed FX crop.
What WOULD be superb is if Nikon could bring a sensor like that, in a D3 build like body (I realize it would be larger I mean built as well) and offer it for at least 25%-30% less than any previous competition. Now THAT would sent the photographic world on it's ear.
I agree, it would be truly a major step forward!!
Combining the Nikon DSLR expertise and lens craftsmanship into a medium format would be ultimate!!
But then yes, it would come at a price... I can only image such camera around $10K but like you said, if they price it at 25-30% less than the competition, it would be killer!
Nikon has been aggressive on their price points since the introduction of the D 1, if you remember Kodak was the only game in town before Nikon came to market with the D 1. The price for the Kodak 660 was originally 29,000 before Nikon introduced the D 1 as rumors of the D 1 introduction became closer to reality Kodak cut the price of the 660 to 13,000. Kodak came to market with the 620 X which had an ISO of 6400 right after the D 1 hit the market priced to be in competition with the D 1. The 6 mp 760 was introduced a few months later at 7,000. Nikon basically forced Kodak out of the DSLR market thought its aggressive and innovative feature packed camera bodies, I would not count Nikon out when it come to taking on the high mega pixel camera back manufactures. If I were a company president that made medium format camera backs observing what Nikon has brought to market lately I would be very concerned.

Remember, medium format is a different beast entirely. It wouldn't be all that surprising if that required a new mount.

I agree. It will need a new mount and new lenses. That wouldn't stop me buying one at all (if price is reasonable). I like the idea of RF instead of SLR too. Body should be more compact then MF SLRs and no big flapping mirror. Bring it on!

ok then ask what its like to shoot with a H3D II. its incredibly clear 39MP and now 50MP. it makes looking at a 24MP seem like mush when working them. but then working with a 300MB file is a great place to start.
I love me some square. I always thought it was kind of sad that Hasselblad went with a 6x4.5-ratio sensor (whatever the actual size is) rather than square in their digital product.
(And yeah, you can crop - but I prefer seeing it in the viewfinder... and getting the full frame/resolution.)
Sounds like diworsification to me. There are holes in the current lens line up so lets throw in another monkey wrench to make things even more complicated.

Def. a new mount!
The real question is will we be able to use DX and FX lenses with a MX mount adapter?! That would be awesome!!!
That is key I think.

So you will spend God knows how much more than a D3 to buy this MX camera and then use an adapter on it. Right. And a DX lens. I'm pretty sure a 18-55 will be a perfect match with your hypothetical DX-to-MX adapter for your $10k camera.
I guess people buy Holgas so they might as well buy this. Although a Holga does have a purpose. It's crap by design.
Okay, I'm a little confused. People have a HUGE problem with Canon's pricing...$8k for the top of the line camera. Now all of a sudden, if Nikon has a $10k camera, people are willing to sell their children to get their hands on it. I'm really confused now...What do you people want...or do you even know!!!
