i have never really used my 1dmkiiN in one shot AF mode and now that I am it constantly beeps when it acquires focus, is there a way for me to turn this off??

The on/off switch has three positions. Off, On without beep, on with beep. Put it in the middle position.

No, it need not be a joke - if you "always" put the switch in the same position and then one day accidentally use the other one you'll get a different result without realising what you have done. Also, the non-1-series bodies use the switch differently and that can cause some confusion.

Yes, sorry it does sound like a joke but no. I have my 1D for just a year now and never read the manual or used the other switch.
