p.1 #1 · Cute chicks

I thought these chicks were really cute. Shot with Canon 1Ds III, 100-400 with 1.4x TC in Pacific Grove, CA. I was looking for cormorants to shoot and spotted these Western Gull chicks squabbling over what they thought was food between their proud protectors.

Hi Perspective , The is delightful.nice and sharp showing the details of the chicks.
Btw my walked in when I was viewing your image and was ohhing and aghing as mother do she then said such a wonderful image
One question I have is I have a 350D and a 40D and the 100-400 IS when you use the multiplier do you loose auto focus when the aperture becomes greater than F8.
Or is this an urban myth from a camera store. I was told if used a teleconverter / multiplier I would loose the autofocus so I hadnt bother getting one.

The 100-400 cannot AF past 5.6 on any body less than a 1D or 1Ds series body. So you could put a 1.4 on your 40D but you would lose the AF at 400mm. There's a method where you can tape off some pins to get around this, or use a Kenko 1.4 which doesn't report the aperture back to the camera and then you just compensate +1 EC on the camera.

They sure don't look much like their parents. I went back yesterday but the chicks were hidden in a cleft of rock and I couldn't get any more shots.
