Terry D Online Image Upload: On Mora Flora... A few from over the hill this afternoon. I wish you could share in the beauty down there... it is heaven on earth... My dog and my cats love tagging along... it's a riot to watch them. They love being with me in the woods. Five of my seven cats trailed along behind me on our photographic safari. Looks like you have something real nice!! Good for you. Hi Tim. I think you are keying into my shooting style... something I don't think about much, but just kinda do. There are thousands of flowers to shoot and choose from, but I look for a certain symmetry in them and color, then the background and then I get down in the mud I will say this. I shot for over 30 years with a Nikon SLR and me and the DOF preview button were well acquainted. When Nikon came up with the DX format, I was lost for a while... just couldn't get the hang of DX DOF... but the D3 has set me free from that now and I'm so please about that one little detail. To me it makes ALL the difference in the world when doing this kind of photography... that and a big bright viewfinder so you can see what is going on in there. Your added comments in reply to Tim is most interesting and helpful. I would love to also see your EXIF data, which lens/fNo, and do you ever use any fill flash? No, I don't think you are 'over the hill' but your shots are over the top man Lovely use of shallow DOF, funny how the subject and BG dictates how little or how much to use. I too had a great day out and will be sharing later, birds, critters and of course................wild flowers too! I don't know why (or can't remember why) my exif is dropping out... it wasn't intended. Could it be getting lost when I save for the Web in CS3 If someone can enlighten me, I will address that right away. To answer some of your questions: - I do use flash sometimes, although the last 3 posts had none used in any of them... all natural light. - I have always used either a 60mm micro or the 105mm micro Nikkor, but have just recently upgraded to AF and VR versions as I'm getting older and find I need all the help I can get sometimes. I have to add, though, I'm NOT a big AF user... If it HUNTS one time... IT GET'S TURNED OFF. I usually MF focus to get the approximate size for repro and cropping I want and then move in and out "Find Focusing" to focus the Stamen of the flower and check DOF to see how much of the petals will focus at any given f-stop. - I LOVE and use selectively, D-Lighting to even out the contrast... eliminates the need for flash! Even with a backlit shot it works very well. - I seldom shoot stopped down more than about f11... I like the OOF effect. It isolates the flower and keeps distracting backgrounds from competing for attention. - I'm not afraid of noise... and not adverse to using noise reduction to clean it up later. I do go back over the flower with the history brush after using it, because the noise seldom hurts the subject detail, but does distract if in the background area. I hope this helps a bit. My main go-to lens is the 105mm . I really like the new one, but honestly, could do the very same thing with the old MF version. I need the VR help now. Cheers, terry May 07, 2008 at 11:25 PM

Martin Thank you Martin. I'll try to get some shots of the cats together (not an easy trick) the next time out. I do have one from a few years back that was taken this very time of year that I'll post in a new thread for you. It has always been one of my favorites. You CAN do macro shots with the 500 you know... focuses down to 12 feet. You are very kind to say these things...
