p.1 #3 · Portrait Session Suggestions? | |

No big deal, really. Portrait work differs from wedding work very little. I'm sure you've shot outdoor wedding stuff. Portait work is the same just with smaller people who are not dress up. It's a great add on to your wedding business if anything. Usually you hear of folks that do portraits and not weddings. If you can tackle a wedding, a portrait session should be a piece of cake.
As for what to charge, go to many of the site belonging to the pros here on FM and find what price range you would be comfortable with. I NEVER give away images from my portrait/senior sessions. They are for sale at the price of $500.
I would reconsider pre guessing how long the PP will take you. If you do this you will feel cheated if you go over. My philosophy has been, make the image magic and they WILL buy. The more time I spend, (for the most part) the more prints I sell. I'm not afraid of the work.

Thanks! I guess what is confusing to me is the fact that this new client only wants 4 unmounted prints and a disk of the images (low resolutions for emailing) instead of one of my usual album packages. My impression is that I won't spend more than an hour at the park with the four subjects (about the same amount of time I spend on regular engagement shots). As for PP, I usually don't spend too much time on the out door shots because lighting (including fill lighting) is not a problem, not too much grain. I will probably spend a few minutes getting rid of face shine, some pimple cleanups, and cropping, maybe a BW conversion or two. It's basically a smaller job than what I'm used to.
Judging by my current hourly prices based on my expenses, I can't compete with local J.C. Penny or Walmart studios in terms of portrait package deal prices. They seem to offer a bunch of prints for under a couple of hundred dollars. I know that she wants me to do the portrait session because of my shooting style, but I'm concerned that when I quote her a price that will be probably twice as much as what local studios charge for less than 1/10th of the amount of prints she might think I'm trying to rip her off. I wouldn't care so much if it weren't because I was recommended to her by one of my best clients. Again, I usually turn down portrait requests (as well as those sweet 15 parties) but this time I accepted because of the close relationship with the original client.
